Now playing on natures stage in the Midwest: This is the time of year youll enjoy the trilling of American Toads. The trill is 6-30 seconds long and is the males "advertising call" for females.
Natures ponder point: Park officials set fire to forests and meadows in spring. On purpose. Fire is natures way of recycling nutrients and enriching the soil, exposing soil to the sun to benefit seed germination, and clearing undergrowth that fuels out-of-control wildfires. Controlled fire only kills non-native plants. The deep-roots of native plants and wildflowers allow them to withstand the heat and bloom once again. Think about people you know who are deeply enough rooted that lifes fires refine them, but do not destroy them.
